MON 810 : l'absurde feu vert de l'EFSABruxelles / Paris, le 30 juin 2009 ? Selon l'avis de l'Autorité européenne de sécurité des aliments (EFSA ou AESA), qui sera rendu public aujourd'hui, sur l'éventuelle réautorisation du maïs MON810, ce maïs ne présente aucun risque ou problème pour l'environnement et la santé humaine. Pourtant, douze Etats membres, dont la France, ont récemment fait part de leur préoccupation à l'EFSA et six Etats membres en ont interdit la culture sur leurs territoires sur la base d'études scientifiques de haut niveau. Le clash entre la Commission européenne et les Etats membres aura bien lieu.

Kingsnorth RevisitedGreenpeace activists have boarded a bulk freighter carrying coal to the UK's controversial Kingsnorth power station in Kent. Just after midnight, Greenpeace volunteers intercepted the freighter using rigid inflatable speedboats. Greenpeace laat ballonnetje op over kernenergieAan de centrales van Doel en Tihange lieten activisten deze ochtend 4.000 ballonnen in de lucht. De ballonnen simuleren de verspreiding van een radioactieve wolk, die vrij kan komen door een zwaar kernongeval. Om de nucleaire risico's extra in de verf te zetten, cirkelde rond de centrales van Tihange een paramotor (gemotoriseerde parapente) met op een grote spandoek de boodschap: ?Want to risk it??. Voor Greenpeace blijft de kernuitstap de beste verzekering tegen de risico's van kernenergie.

Eerste windmolens draaien voor Belgische kustOp de Thorntonbank voor de kust van Blankenberge werd vorige week het eerste offshore windturbinepark officieel in gebruik genomen. Het bedrijf C-power, dat de turbines liet bouwen, spreekt van drie primeurs in één. Nergens ter wereld staan zulke grote turbines op zee, die zo ver van de kust liggen en zo diep in de zeebodem verankerd zitten. Investeringen in windenergie zijn voor Greenpeace een uitstekende manier om de kernuitstap te versnellen.

Dangers du maïs transgénique MON810 à nouveau sous-évaluésL?autorité de sécurité alimentaire européenne (EFSA) vient de décider de ne pas tenir compte des preuves scientifiques démontrant la toxicité du maïs transgénique de Monsanto pour lequel une nouvelle demande d'autorisation est en cours auprès de l'Union européenne. Une attitude étonnante si l'on sait que six Etats membres (Allemagne, Autriche, France, Grèce, Hongrie, Luxembourg) ont décidé d'interdire ce maïs OGM en se basant sur ces éléments scientifiques!

Risques de haut vol à Tihange?Want to risk it??: prêts à prendre le risque ? C'est la question que Greenpeace a posée ce matin depuis la centrale nucléaire de Tihange, près de Huy. La banderole était déployée depuis un parapente à moteur. 4.000 ballons biodégrables ont ensuite été lâchés pour symboliser la dispersion de composés radioactifs. Un lâcher de ballons similaire a été organisé à la centrale nucléaire de Doel (Anvers). Les risques liés au nucléaire ne sont pas aussi improbables que ne le prétend Electrabel. Par ces actions, Greenpeace dénonce le régime d'assurance complaisant dont a bénéficé Electrabel et interpelle les politiques en charge du dossier. La fermeture des réacteurs est la meilleure assurance contre les risques liés au nucléaire.

Ouverture du parc éolien du ThorntonbankLe premier parc éolien offshore a officiellement ouvert ses portes la semaine dernière sur le Thorntonbank, au large des côtes belges. Pour l'entreprise C-power, qui a fait construire ces turbines, il s'agit non pas d'une, mais bien de trois primeurs: ces éoliennes se distinguent par leur taille imposante, par leur éloignement par rapport à la côte et par la profondeur à laquelle elles sont fixées dans le fond marin. Investir dans les éoliennes en mer constitue pour Greenpeace une excellente manière d'accélérer la sortie du nucléaire.

Life has calmed down a bit since Emma was attacked just over a week ago. I can't believe it's been more than a week already, time has flown by. We were attempting to board a tuna vessel in Malta to carry out an inspection when Emma was beaten in the face and neck by Massimo Cappitta, director of Mare Blu Tuna Farm. It was a pretty horrible day. I have never witnessed violence like that before. Emma, as strong a woman though she is, looked so small pinned under the arms of Cappitta. Glastonbury: scenes from the field There are a lot of tired but very happy (not to mention sun-kissed) people around the office today. Those who manned the Greenpeace field at Glastonbury are reappearing and they have such tales to tell. (I would have asked one of them to write this update, but they're all worn out.) The big theme this year was our ongoing Airplot campaign and the field resembled Sipson village, complete with a replica of the King William IV pub along with staff member Tracy (she was real, though), there was a drive to get even more people involved. The signatures are still being counted but it looks like many thousands more have become beneficial owners of the plot of land we've bought down near Heathrow airport, including a certain Michael Eavis. Glastonbury: are you in the no? I decided to give Glastonbury a miss this year, but it looks like everyone currently stuck in a seven-hour tailback in the car park had a rollickin' good time. Not just because of the sunshine or Blur's barnstorming set last night (slightly jealous I missed that), but the Greenpeace field was once again a marvel to behold. With a replica of Sipson village - which will be obliterated by a third runway at Heathrow -  and an out-of-control tower, it brought out Airplot campaign into the heart of Somerset, complete with a Big No' made from visitors to the field. Thanks to the team from green.tv who were also at the festival with their cameras, the visual record below has been made for posterity, which features lots of very happy, very sunny people giving new runways the big thumbs down....

IWC een dag te vroeg en jaren te laatDe International Whaling Commission (IWC) heeft gisteren haar jaarvergadering maar voortijdig beëindigd, omdat de leden er niet uitkwamen. Pas over een jaar, in 2010, willen de landen een beslissing nemen over de walvisjacht.

Greenpeace bouwt kernafvalopslag voor tweede kerncentrale Greenpeace is begonnen met de bouw van een opslagplaats voor kernafval voor de nieuwe kerncentrale van het energiebedrijf Delta. Met deze actie wil Greenpeace Delta met de neus op de feiten drukken: een kerncentrale produceert niet alleen elektriciteit maar ook kernafval dat 240.000 jaar gevaarlijk blijft en al die tijd ergens moet worden opgeslagen. Een kerncentrale zal ons niet helpen in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering; door de enorme investering wordt de ontwikkeling van een écht schone energievoorziening geblokkeerd.

It's destination is the disintegrating Petermann Glacier, but to reach the glacier our ship must pass through the Nares Strait, which could be flooded with dangerous multi-year ice at any moment. A team of independent scientists have joined the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise as it sails to the northeast coast of Greenland at the start of a three month expedition to bear witness to the accelerating polar melt, which threatens to raise sea levels around the world by seven meters. The scientists will continue their work to better understand why the ice is melting so quickly.

Life has calmed down a bit since Emma was attacked just over a week ago. I can't believe it's been more than a week already, time has flown by. We were attempting to board a tuna vessel in Malta to carry out an inspection when Emma was beaten in the face and neck by Massimo Cappitta, director of Mare Blu Tuna Farm. It was a pretty horrible day. I have never witnessed violence like that before. Emma, as strong a woman though she is, looked so small pinned under the arms of Cappitta. Glastonbury: scenes from the field There are a lot of tired but very happy (not to mention sun-kissed) people around the office today. Those who manned the Greenpeace field at Glastonbury are reappearing and they have such tales to tell. (I would have asked one of them to write this update, but they're all worn out.) The big theme this year was our ongoing Airplot campaign and the field resembled Sipson village, complete with a replica of the King William IV pub along with staff member Tracy (she was real, though), there was a drive to get even more people involved. Glastonbury: are you in the no? I decided to give Glastonbury a miss this year, but it looks like everyone currently stuck in a seven-hour tailback in the car park had a rollickin' good time. Not just because of the sunshine or Blur's barnstorming set last night (slightly jealous I missed that), but the Greenpeace field was once again a marvel to behold. With a replica of Sipson village - which will be obliterated by a third runway at Heathrow -  and an out-of-control tower, it brought out Airplot campaign into the heart of Somerset, complete with a Big No' made from visitors to the field. Thanks to the team from green.tv who were also at the festival with their cameras, the visual record below has been made for posterity, which features lots of very happy, very sunny people giving new runways the big thumbs down....
