Nouvel OGM autorisé en Europe : la patate transgénique !La Commission européenne Barroso II vient d'autoriser la culture d'un nouvel OGM, une pomme de terre, mise au point par BASF pour les importantes quantités d'amidon qu'elle contient. Cette décision représente un précédent important car la dernière autorisation d'un organisme génétiquement modifié (OGM) au sein de l'Union européenne remonte à 12 ans. New report sets tar sands in a global context A new report from Friends of the Earth and oil finance experts Platform places a clear financial analysis of the Canadian tar sands alongside testimonies of those affected by the race to extract oil from the Albertan wilderness. I was struck by the argument it makes that the Canadian tar sands are the 'test case' for an oil industry that wants to move into extracting dirtier unconventional oil in other parts of the world. The call was made following a hastily approved Provincial Resolution in Pangasinan that could potentially open up the province to the construction of two new nuclear power plants.

Pollution is not a secretTwenty Greenpeace activists today unfurled a banner saying ?Information Disclosure: Pollution is not a secret? at the Department of Industrial Works (DIW) building in Central Bangkok to urge the DIW to proactively tackle chemical contamination of Thailand?s water resources, beginning with the Chao Phraya River. Barroso Commission authorises controversial GMO potatoIn one of its first decisions since taking office, the European Commission has today authorised the cultivation of a genetically modified (GM) crop for the first time since 1998. Health Commissioner Dalli, in agreement with President Barroso, used the so-called written procedure to authorise this crop so as to avoid a debate in the College of Commissioners. The genetically engineered potato (known as Amflora) developed by German agro-chemical company BASF contains a gene that confers resistance to certain antibiotics. Greenpeace warns that this GM crop poses an unacceptable risk to human and animal health, as well as to the environment.

New Commission supports bluefin tuna trade banAfter months of deadlock, the European Commission has called on the EU to back the suspension of the international trade in bluefin tuna. EU environment Commissioner Janez Poto?nik put forward the proposal recommending the EU?s support for the listing of bluefin tuna under appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The Commission?s fisheries department, now led by incoming Commissioner Damanaki, has lifted its opposition to the move.

11% decline in cultivation of GM crops in Europe in 2009Next week, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), a biotech industry-funded body, will publish its annual report including figures on the acreage of land planted with GM crops. Greenpeace denounces the ISAAA for promoting GM crops as a solution to world poverty and world hunger. GM crops are in fact failing both in the fields and on the market, posing a serious threat to the environment and the livelihoods of farmers.

The EU should re-establish climate leadershipWith European leaders meeting in Brussels today for the first time since the botched Copenhagen climate summit in December 2009, Greenpeace calls on heads of state and government to shape an ambitious and influential EU position for the next round of international climate negotiations. This would enable Europe to regain its leadership in the struggle against climate change.

EU on the verge of supporting bluefin tuna trade banThe EU could be on the verge of supporting the international listing of bluefin tuna as an endangered species, said Greenpeace today. EU fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki is reported by Reuters as backing a suspension in the bluefin tuna trade. In a vote earlier today, the European Parliament joined an overwhelming majority of member states now calling for the listing bluefin of tuna under appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), effectively calling for a suspension of the fishery.

Greenpeace Bering Sea Expedition BeginsThe Greenpeace ship Esperanza arrived in Homer, Alaska to begin the group?s ambitious research and outreach expedition into the Bering Sea, the same waters where Greenpeace?s very first protest took place nearly 36 years ago. The international environmental group will spend two months this summer in the Bering, conducting scientific surveys of underwater canyons and working with native Alaskan communities to push for sustainable fishing practices in the area. By utilizing state-of-the-art technology to observe coral, sponges and hopefully discover new species, and through gaining the support of native communities, Greenpeace will push for greater protection of the Bering waters.

Thousands March Globally With Greenpeace for Whale ProtectionThousands of people in dozens of countries marched today to call for whale protection as the International Whaling Commission (IWC) starts its annual meeting, part of Greenpeace?s "Big Blue March" taking place in over 50 cities. In Anchorage, venue for the IWC meeting, the parade was led by whale campaigners, "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere, Stephen Colletti, host of MTV?s "Total Request Live," Esai Morales of "NYPD Blue" and the Save the Whales Again campaign, Australian surfer Dave Rastovich and artist Howie Cooke. The march ended with a human aerial art event in downtown Anchorage, the culmination of a series of art events which began in Mexico last week.

Tokyo Two trial: stage two Tension is rising as round two of the Tokyo Two trial starts today in Aomori, Japan, where Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki are on trial in Japan for their role in exposing major corruption in the government funded whaling industry. This week they get to give evidence for the first time, and the whistleblower who alerted them to the embezlement scandal will also take the stand. There are still concerns over the fairness of the trial, however, as the members of the whaling crew who received the stolen whalemeat look as though they may be able to avoid giving evidence. It was the annual get-together of the key volunteers who keep our nationwide network of supporters motivated and informed about our campaign work. New report sets tar sands in a global context A new report from Friends of the Earth and oil finance experts Platform places a clear financial analysis of the Canadian tar sands alongside testimonies of those affected by the race to extract oil from the Albertan wilderness. I was struck by the argument it makes that the Canadian tar sands are the 'test case' for an oil industry that wants to move into extracting dirtier unconventional oil in other parts of the world.
